The San Diego Railroad Museum

The San Diego Railroad museum’s miniature models of actual railroads and routes in California remind us of our country’s rich railroad history. The museum’s goal is to “actively engage people from every community and demographic, to delight and teach the art of model railroading and the history of railroads.” The museum is open Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. And best of all, it’s absolutely free!

So Why Should You Visit the San Diego Model Railroad Museum?

1.Fascinating Exhibits

The 27,000 square feet of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is home to some large and very intricate railroad layouts! For instance, the Tehachapi Pass is a layout that represents 70 miles of railroad that was built between Bakersfield and Mojave. This two-level Southern Pacific – Santa Fe line is incredibly accurate, matching the original line almost turn-for-turn. Even the geographical detail on the model painstakingly matches the original geography. And in the Toy Train gallery, you become the conductor by using a remote control. The trains themselves seem to come to life with their whistles, horns, and even smoke! In the coal mine section, even young kids can operate the trains with a simple push of a button.

2. Fun Railroad Events

Events like Thomas and Friends Family Day are a huge hit with families. As any parent knows, Thomas the train and his well-meant mistakes have made him a very popular steam engine! So if your little one is a Thomas fan, they’ll love coming to the San Diego Railroad Museum in their Thomas gear. There’s live performances and music to dance to, and railroad-themed crafts. They can even operate a model rain with a Thomas and Percy on the tracks! Check their website for dates this event is offered.

3. A Great Location

The San Diego Railroad Museum is located in Balboa Park, a central location that’s right in the heart of San Diego. Balboa Park has tons of attractions, museums, and performing arts. And there’s lots to keep the kids occupied here. In fact, you could spend your whole vacation in just this area and won’t get bored. The world-famous San Diego Zoo is also in Balboa Park, along with many different gardens and play areas. Other museums, like the San Diego Natural History Museum, can keep you occupied for hours. A variety of restaurants means that you will never go hungry. And the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater is a long-standing tradition for generations of children.
